Christmas Quilt Quilts of Love Series Vannetta Chapman 9781426752773 Books

This holiday season, I had the wonderful privilege of reading and reviewing "The Christmas Quilt" by Vannetta Chapman! It was actually the first book of hers that I had read, but after I finished it, I immediately searched for more books by her!

Annie and Samuel are busy as can be as they make their rounds to all of the sick people in their community, while still making time for each other and family and friends. It's Christmas time and Annie and her best friend Leah are both pregnant with their first boppli (babies). Amish do not believe in using medical technology unless absolutely necessary, but Leah's midwife is sure that Leah is carrying twins! It is even more special because Annie and Leah are actually sister-in-laws because Annie and Leah's husband, Adam are siblings!

Everything seems to be going perfectly as the families prepare for the holiday season, but one night Leah wakes up to an excrutiating pain in her belly and must be transported to an Englisch hospital.

While there, Leah learns that her body is trying to go into labor even though it is much too early for the babies to be born. The doctors must keep a close watch on her at all times, which makes it necessary for Leah to remain in the hospital for the duration of her pregnancy. Annie accompanies her on this trip as her support system, as Adam cannot leave the farm for that long. While there, Annie continues to work on her baby gift to Leah, a baby quilt. While in the hospital, Leah finds out so much about herself and what God is trying to show her through these trials.

I think this was a lovely story and definitely a fantastic introduction to Amish fiction for me! I found it very hard to put down and finished this book in a matter of only two days! I love the family values and wonderful sense of community that was portrayed in this book. I also loved that the character's relationship with God was an essential key to the story. From what I understand about the Amish, they do not like to focus on material possessions and do not believe in the help of medical technology if it is not necessary. I found the author's description to be tasteful and very well written! I rate this book as 5 stars and will definitely read it again!

I received this book for free from Litfuse to give my honest unbiased opinion.

Christmas Quilt Quilts of Love Series Vannetta Chapman 9781426752773 Books Reviews

Though this book is part of a series, each novel in it is a stand-alone story so they can be read in any order.

The characters are well developed and easy to relate with. There are two main couples that are the focal point of the story. At the beginning of the book they get married in a double wedding. We have Annie and her husband Samuel, who are part of the community’s “medical” care team. The second couple is Annie’s brother Adam and his new wife, Leah.

The story focuses on growth and maturing during a time of hardship. I truly enjoyed reading about how the whole community came around and helped the young family to deal with what they were going through. It was wonderful seeing how each person turned to God and sought Him and His help. He became their source of peace and strength.

One aspect of the story that I got so much pleasure out of was the series of stories that Annie and Leah were telling. They did have some help from others as they were going through the process of relating stories about the nine different gifts of the Holy Spirit as listed in Galatians 522-23. The way that Vannetta brought this into the story and then tied everything together with this was fantastic.
In "The Christmas Quilt" by Vannetta Chapman, Annie's nursing skills from "A Simple Amish Christmas" were not a waste of her time during her "rumspringa". She uses what she learned to help her community.
Annie and Leah (Annie's sister-in-law) are more than family, they are the best of friends. Both women are pregnant and expecting their first offspring--with lots of stories to share when Leah has a difficult pregnancy and they spend lots of time in the hospital and end up stitching together a baby quilt that was supposed to be a gift from Annie to Leah.
Much like the stories, they are stitched together with the nine fruits of the spirit--a "gut" idea according to Samuel, Annie's husband. This binds them together with their husbands, each other, other family members, their community and the medical workers around them.
When reading this book, I could feel the love that was so bountiful at a very special life event as well as the family ties that bind other family members together, such as Rachel and Onkel Eli. The Amish families are tight-knit and pull together as a community during the times of financial struggles.
This was a wonderful book stitched full of love. I have such respect for the Amish and their love for God and how they take care of their families--as Leah's husband says, "It only takes a few minutes to appreciate what Gotte has given. I hope everyone who reads "The Christmas Quilt" will love it as much as I did. Vannetta did a wonderful job.
