Good: This is one of my favorite Varley novels - hell, one of my favorite novels, period - which I recently re-read after about 15 years. Varley's unmatched imagination and storytelling prowess are in peak form here, telling the story of the near annihilation of human civilization on the Moon through the eyes of tabloid - excuse me, "padloid" - reporter Hildy Johnson; a story driven by characters who remain deeply, identifiably human despite - or sometimes because of - being immersed in wildly advanced technology they don't entirely control. Up there with the best of Heinlein or Bradbury or Asimov.

Bad: The story drags a little in the middle. You still won't even be tempted to put the book down.

Bottom line: Go to the "look inside" tab on the product page. Read the very first line of the very first chapter. Then try to convince yourself you don't want to read this book. You will fail. Five stars.

Varley's writing is great and this is one of my favorites. Because I've read it so many times the typos stand out like mosquito bites - reading peacefully in the flow and then, zot! Another damn mosquito. Doesn't anyone read these books before they get sold on ? It's not like you're giving them away. I'd be happy to fix it for you, or Publisher, just let me help...
What do you do when every aspect of your life is dependent on a computer that may be having some personal issues? John Varley is one of the great SF writers. Years after he wrote this novel it remains a really good read, the ideas still seem fresh and the humor, as always is, well - great. If you like this - it is guarranteed that you will absolutely lobve 'The Golden Globe'; which is also set in this universe.
This is most definitely my new favorite book, and I'm only halfway through it. Don't try to judge it by the first chapter, or two.

I've been reading it for about two months now. I could've finished it in two or three days with how captivating the storyline is, but this is one of those books that I want to bask in the glory of for a while.
Interesting read. I read this when I was a kid and for some reason a lot of the concepts have been regurgitating in my mind lately. Now, as an adult, I'm having trouble getting through the book. There are a lot of interesting concepts in this story. If you like Joe Rogan, a lot of his ideas about the future are realized in this writing (AI, whimsical sex change). If you like science-fiction and a glimpse at contemporary conspiratorial ideas, check this out.
I have read Steal Beach a number of times in a print edition, so I was very excited to see it in a kindle format. It is my favorite John Varley novel. Unfortunately, it contains more than a few glaring typos that detract from the novel. It is not as bad as some the Stephen King conversions, but still makes reading less enjoyable. It appears that it was just scanned in by OCR without proofreading. Apparently, the publisher does not employ any proofreaders or even anyone who can read.
Like everything from John Varley that I have read, a good read. No - an excellent read. Varley has a fertile imagination and a great sense of pacing, his writing style is fluent and articulate without being obtrusive or intrusive in any way, and his vision of a technological future amongst the stars and planets is fascinating. OK one or two points give a way the date the book was written, for instance an implanted cell phone is dialled by tapping the inside of the user's teeth with the tongue - obviously written before the age of huge memory and embedded phone books - but it's easy to overlook this kind of thing just as we do with say Asimov and other earlier SF writers. They envision a technological future pretty close to what we see today; we forgive them if the details are somewhat different, because it's more about the philosophy, human interaction and lifestyle than the technology itself.
Anyone with the least bit of interest in science fiction should pick up a copy of John Varley's 'Steel Beach'. You may also want a cup of tea, a warm blanket, and a thesaurus handy when you dig in.

Set on the moon, in the not too distant future (spoiler, humans lose Earth in an invasion and get deported to Luna before the book even starts), the story revolves around one individual's search for the perfect sandwich... or the meaning of life, whichever comes first.
It's a world of perfect medicine, where hardly anyone actually dies anymore; a utopia where humanity's every want and need is provided for by machines, controlled by the omnipresent Central Computer. The CC does everything it can to keep its humans happy, healthy and comfortable; so why is the suicide rate steadily rising on Luna? It seems the one need the CC can't provide is a reason for humanity to exist.

Incredibly well written, funny, poignant, thought provoking, and overall a thoroughly mind bending and assiduous examination of what it means to be human. Read it.
